Accurately quoting something as simple as a knock-knock joke is a struggle sometimes. This is just one of the reasons I love to paint. What does not being able to tell a joke have to do with art? Abstract painting is an effortless way to communicate complex thoughts or feelings. I do not think in a linear way. I arrive at answers to problems without always knowing the exact steps. “Show your work” in math class was a special kind of hell for me. I have difficulty putting my thoughts or feelings into words. When I finish a painting, I can say, “Ah, yes, that is exactly how I was feeling.”
I have never loved a phrase about creativity and productivity more than “in the zone.” Researching many definitions, I can boil it down to this for myself: “When painting, I am fully immersed with energized focus and joy while being challenged.” When I am painting, I do not know what time it is. I do not care if I have eaten. I am not anxious about tomorrow. I am happy.
While I hope to continue to hear from professionals and other artists who love my work, the best compliment I could receive comes from those who have never loved art before. It made me very happy to receive this from a client's friend recently: “I absolutely love your artwork and I’m the least artsy person I know.” Bringing something to life that would not have existed otherwise and knowing it broke through a barrier of someone who had never loved art before…that’s just amazing to me.
I have been addicted to painting abstract art for fifteen years. Although I could only paint part-time until 2022, I am blessed to paint full-time now that I retired from my full-time, 9-5 grind (um, I mean career). It brings my soul joy to watch a painting unfold with a life of its own. I primarily love using acrylics and mixed media. I first started painting with oil pastels and love working without brushes. I am still learning new techniques and discovering new mediums but I like acrylics for their versatility and quick drying time.
My style is very eclectic and somewhat rebellious. I don't adhere strictly to the "color wheel" and my palette greatly changes based on my mood and my state of mind. Still, I am heavily influenced by the vibrant colors and textures, as well as experimentation. I strive to create pieces that are interesting and would look good with any contemporary or transitional decor. Art is truly beautiful or disturbing based on the eye of the beholder and not all art appeals to everyone. The mystery of how art appeals to individuals is part of the allure.
Don’t miss out!
I am getting ready with new paintings and can't wait to see you there.
